The Lanzhou Foci Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. manufacturers and distributes traditional Chinese medicines, western drugs, and raw herbs.
 It was established in 1929 in Shanghai and was originally called the Shanghai Foci Medicine Factory. Its founder, Mr. Yu Hui Guan, was a devout Buddhist, and from the phrase ¡°Our merciful Buddha rescues all living creatures¡± named his factory Foci, or ¡°Benevolent Buddha¡±.
Shanghai of the 1930¡¯s was quite modern, and Mr. Yu eagerly incorporated the technological innovations of the time. His vision was to modernize Chinese medicine, and his factory spearheaded the use of mechanical equipment in herb extraction. Foci products became known for their quality, efficacy and ease of use, and exports to Southeast Asia and neighboring Japan began in 1931.
In 1959, Foci, which by this time was State owned, was moved to Lanzhou, the capital of the western province of Gansu. The beautiful city of Lanzhou was the first Chinese city on the silk route, and to this day has a mixed population with many Persian influences and mosques all over the city. The Foci Factory moved there to help develop and populate the western region, and to take advantage of the naturally abundant Chinese herbs. The factory was renamed the Lanzhou Foci Pharmaceutical Factory and made both Chinese medicine and western drugs. Lanzhou Foci continued to modernize the production of Chinese medicine, perfecting extraction and pill forming techniques, and in 1978, was among 19 TCM factories given special recognition by the People¡¯s Republic of China. Today, its beautiful pills are still considered among the best in China.
In additions to its many awards and achievements, Lanzhou Foci¡¯s popular products gained a wider international audience after receiving GMP certification from the Australia¡¯s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in 1996, China¡¯s State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) in 1999, and Japan¡¯s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (MHLW) in 2006. Its over 300 products, including pills, tablets, capsules, and granules are trusted and welcomed by practitioners and consumers around the world. In addition to manufacturing, the Lanzhou Foci Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. also conducts research to develop new botanical drugs at its New Product R & D Center.
Lanzhou Foci employs over 1500 people, including specialists in pharmacology, medical science, chemistry, biology, economics, and engineering numbering almost 400. It produces over ten dosage forms including extracted pill, tablet, liquid, granular, and capsule products in its domestic and internationally GMP certified facilities. It is ranked among the top 50 out of over 2,000 Chinese medicine enterprises in China, and its 300 products include broad-spectrum antibiotics and products for gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological problems, and pediatric products. Lanzhou Foci¡¯s products can be found in 27 countries including the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Australia. Lanzhou Foci was the earliest exporter of Chinese medicine and still exports the greatest number of products, and is ranked in the top 10 of TCM exporters.
